I had a few hours before I needed to catch a flight out of BWI, so I went to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis to look around.

tomsnest > The crypt for John Paul Jones, the "father" of the US Navy. In 1905, the well-preserved remains of John Paul Jones were found in Paris and brought to Annapolis with a squadron of U. S. warships as honor guard.

tomsnest > President Theodore Roosevelt delivered the principal address at commemorative services in 1906. John Paul Jones was laid to rest in January, 1913, in the crypt designed by Whitney Warren. The sarcophagus of Royal Pyrenees marble donated by the French government, is the work of French sculptor Sylvain Salieres.

tomsnest > "Non sibi, sed patriae" (Not for Self but for Country). The crypt is constantly guarded by midshipmen.

tomsnest > The third Navy Chapel was designed by Ernest Flagg and Phillipe Cret. Admiral George Dewey laid the first cornerstone in 1904 and construction was completed in 1940.
